Most Poisonous Animal

Not all beautiful frogs depicted here are poisonous, but those who are - can be very deadly indeed. The most poisonous animal is not a snake or a spider. It's a beautiful little frog! "Most frogs produce skin toxins, but the dart poison frogs from Central and South America are the most potent of all. The golden poison frog, called terribilis (the terrible), is so toxic that even touching it can be dangerous. A single terribilis contains enough poison to kill 20,000 mice or 10 people. It is probably the most poisonous animal on Earth."

"Their poison contains toxins that dull the nerves and produce heart and repiratory (sic.) failure. The skin of an adult P. terribilis has enough batrachotoxin to kill 20,000 mice, or 100 adult humans. Two-tenths of a microgram of batrachotoxin is lethal in the human blood stream and each adult P. terribilis contains nearly 200 micrograms."

My god your math is astonishingly bad. First the frog has enough toxin to kill 10 humans. Then it has enough to kill 100. Then you go on to say 2/10 microgram is the bloodstream is leathal in an adult human, with the frog producing 200 micrograms. That equals 1000 lethal human doses. Is this your way of moving decimal points?

In actuality, the frogs are not poisonous. It's been known for some time that their diet is what makes them poisonous. They don't produce the toxin themselves. This has led to these frogs being sold as pets after they're cleansed by diet. When it comes to "animals" who are poisonous, you should check out the Platypus. It's the only known venomous mammal. The funnel web spider of Australia is also extremely poisonous and being a type of Tarantula, it is classified as an animal, rather than an insect.

And if you pay any sort of attention you will see that they are different sources with obviously conflicting views.

Uh, Dan. There is a distinct difference between poisonous and venomous (a platypus is not poisonous, it's venomous). Venomous requires a distinct delivery system for the venom and poisonous requires contact or ingestion. By definition, any animal (including frogs), which produce toxins or aquire them through diet, are poisonous. Also tarantulas are spiders of the family Theraphosidae. Funnel-web spiders are in a different family and as such are not tarantulas. And, ALL insects ARE animals. Check your facts!

The best part is the poisonous (or is that venomous?) comments made about the article.
